Coaching is a synergistic relationship between a coach and a client, designed to access our innate wisdom and resourcefulness and to unlock our full potential.  It is a process which reveals and aligns us with who we truly are and provides us with a safe, nurturing, creative and objective framework to realise ourselves in all areas of our lives.

The term coaching comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning carriage – something that takes you from where you are now, to where you want to be.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Coaching works on the premise that you are naturally creative, resourceful and whole and as such honours you as the expert in your life.  From this foundation, we design an alliance which supports you to move towards your desired outcome.

Typically, life coaching supports personal and professional growth, based on changes initiated by you in pursuit of your specific outcomes. Coaching is future focused with a primary aim of creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in your work or personal life. The emphasis is on doing: goal, action, results and accountability.

Transpersonal means both “through” and “beyond” the personal. While the focus remains on you the client, it also encompasses a wider context of family, community, culture, society, and beyond. It is a whole system perspective. The transpersonal dimension acknowledges you as a multifaceted being (mind, body, spirit, soul) who is intricately inter-connected not only to your environment, relationships and surroundings; but to all beings and systems. Transpersonal coaching seeks to explore beyond the personal to the level of the Spirit and Soul; to access a higher, more enlightened level of consciousness; a core reservoir of energy, innate wisdom, authentic power, purpose and vision. The techniques involved may include and extend beyond the cognitive behavioural level to explore emotional and spiritual intelligence, mindfulness, imagery, metaphor, body wisdom and archetypal energies. Transpersonal coaching works holistically with your chosen agenda and also seeks to discover why that agenda is meaningful for you and whether it feels truly aligned with your authentic self or Soul. It also empowers you to explore new ways of being which can generate actions more aligned with your desired outcomes. Shifting how you are being, rather than what you are doing, is transferable to all aspects of your life. The potential then exists for you to transform your whole perspective, shift your paradigm and expand your entire field of possibility.

In essence Transpersonal Coaching is about working with you to support you to live and work more fully and deeply with purpose and meaning. It is about helping you to get deeper insight into and to practice being who you really are and to become more aligned with your authentic self (Soul).
Consulting is often information and expertise based and assumes that the consultant will diagnose problems, prescribe and, sometimes, implement solutions. Coaching does not rely on having a background or experience in a particular field, but is focused on helping you develop all areas of your life and supporting you to integrate changes and implement your desired outcomes. Counselling and Therapy often focus on resolving difficulties arising from the past that hinder emotional functioning in the present. Coaching focuses on the present and on your goals and aspirations for the future. Transpersonal Coaching incorporates emotional and spiritual intelligence as part of its holistic approach, exploring emotions occurring in the present, but does not attempt to resolve past trauma. Although Transpersonal Coaching is not a healing modality, healing can occur through the coaching process. A Mentor is an expert who provides wisdom and guidance based on his or her own experience and may include advising and counselling. The coaching process does not include advising or counselling, but focuses instead on you finding your own solutions and realising your own objectives. Training programmes are based on predefined objectives and assume a linear learning path in line with an established curriculum usually set out by the trainer. Coaching supports you to clarify your own objectives through a non linear process within a coaching framework but without a set curriculum. Friends and family are an important part of our support system as we move though times of change and challenge. However they tend not to be completely objective, direct and honest with you, in case they hurt your feelings or risk your friendship. Coaches are committed to being objective, telling the truth and challenging you while treating you with unconditional positive regard. Coaches have no agenda apart from that agreed upon with you in the coaching relationship.
My role as your coach in this process is to:

  • Maintain professional boundaries in the coaching relationship, including confidentiality, and adhere to the coaching profession's code of ethics.

The coaching process starts before our initial session! I will send you some resources and ask you to prepare by completing the forms and bringing them along to our first meeting. At this initial session (either face-to-face or by phone, skype) we assess your current opportunities and challenges, define the scope of our coaching alliance, agree the main areas you want to focus on and get a sense of your desired outcomes. We will agree the total number of sessions and address logistics, fees and payment, frequency and length of appointments and any other administrative items. Throughout the sessions we will work with an appreciative approach, grounded in what's working, what's wanted and what's needed to get there. We work on the basis that you are prepared to undertake a journey of self discovery and awareness and to take responsibility for your conscious choices, actions and results. A variety of resources such as assessments, checklists, concepts, models and principles drawn from the behavioural sciences, spiritual traditions and/or the arts and humanities may be incorporated into our coaching conversation. Between coaching sessions, you are encouraged to undertake actions (which may include doing activities but may also focus on changes in your being ie choosing to be more mindful) towards your desired outcome.
Each coaching session will last for one hour unless we agree otherwise at our initial session. The initial session will take 90 mins.
This varies depending on your situation, needs and preferences. Lasting and effective change is best supported over period of at least 3 months with fortnightly sessions i.e. 6 sessions.
